Opening Day, The gates of Hell (Buddism)

8/12 the gates of Hell open and the Ghost month starts for most of Asia. The idea of the spirits getting ready to be released into our world for a couple weeks to enjoy, explore and take part in rituals is a common theme. Also knowing that nothing has clarity, things are blurry, bright colors, splashes of random neon colors, and full of excitement or even containment. The large and small eyes, oddly shaped figures, the parade carrying the Chinese carriages for the high class and the lanterns fly above floating all have a role in this time. We think of only spirits but we must not overlook the small details of what the spirits take with them on their journey's that is often gifted as ghost paper items and burned as offerings...
